Erica Bates

Textile Art

Erica Bates is a textile creative, designer and pattern-maker based in Beaudesert on the Scenic Rim.

Erica fell in love with sewing at 6years old and her career has seen her evolve in a variety of textile based genres from upcycled surfie/hippie/tatt clothing at her Kirra shop in the 70’s, to  the award winning ‘Erica Bates Design’ resort wear label in Surfers Paradise in the 80’s.

When tariffs on imported clothing threatened the Australian fashion industry later that decade, she pivoted into triathlon wear, swimwear and active sportswear manufacture at Burleigh Heads with a new label ‘EB Sportz Australia’ in the 90’s as well partnering a children’s wear label ‘Oki Doki Australia’.

In more recent times she has returned to her roots using vintage and upcycled materials in her current label ‘Just Be It’  featuring one-off garments designed with a relaxed, comfortable vintage-flavored feel, as well as soft sculpture creatures, art dolls and wearable art.

Erica is an advocate of sustainable and ethical fashion. She’s an active member of arts and sustainability groups in the Scenic Rim and runs arts based workshops for adults and children. This is a rewarding way for her to share decades of her own learning and skills, through teaching her students creative ways to reduce textile and kitchen waste going into landfill.

She is also a Knitting Nanna Against Gas, a group of feisty mature age environmental activists who knit to ‘Save the land, air & water for the kiddies’.

Tmac acknowledge the traditional custodians of the lands we operate on, the Wanggerriburras people and pay my respects to elders past, present and emerging.
