tamborine mountain arts collective

Caroline Barnard – Painter

Growing up in Kenya gave me a strong appreciation of nature and a desire to capture its detail through Art. I left Africa when I was 16 years old and after graduating with a first-class degree in Scientific illustration in London some years later, I worked as a freelance illustrator producing commissioned work by a variety of Publishing Houses including Hamlyn, Penguin, Quarto & Blackwell Scientific.

The travel bug kicked in and I left the UK to teach Art at an International school in Indonesia for 5 years. I embraced this new culture and enjoyed the sensory overload that this beautiful country gave me by capturing the surrounding environment through photography, drawing and painting.

Emigrating to Australia was a natural transition for me and I feel fortunate to have taught Art in some wonderful schools in Queensland. In 2016 & 2021 I achieved the Award of Excellence in Qld in the Open category of the QIEU Awards for Excellence in Art Design for two of my artworks. I think it is important to be able to capture the beauty of nature and also highlight environmental issues.

I am currently teaching Art at Hills International College in Jimboomba and continue to enjoy the balance of sharing my knowledge of Art with my students and creating my own artworks at home. Living on Tamborine Mountain is very special with its wonderful community of artists and a constant source of inspiration on my doorstep.
